Army Conducts "Blitzes" on Four Federal Highways

03/08/06 -- Rio [De Janeiro] -- The army has been carrying out blitzes on four access roads to Rio de Janeiro since the early morning hours on Wednesday, with the collaboration of the Federal Highway Police. The operation is part of the mission to recover ten rifles and a pistol stolen last Saturday from a barracks in the neighborhood of São Cristóvão, in the north zone.

The blockades are at the exit of the Rio-Niterói Bridge; on the Washington Luís highway around the Figueira neighborhood, at Duke of Caxias; on the President Dutra highway, around Belvedere; and on Rio-Santos, in Itaguaí. Cars, buses, and trucks are all subject to inspection.

Besides the action in the streets, the Army occupied the Metral slum, in Bangu, in the west zone, where four Army helicopters hovered over the community.
