Free String for Unemployed Women in Dutch Town of Enschede10/17/05 -- By distributing free strings, the City Party of Enschede tries to hook up unemployed women with single men. The initiative is a playful reaction at plans of the local Liberal Party VVD to hook up unemployed women with single men with the help of the city, in order for them not to be dependent on unemployment benefits any longer. With their action, city councilors Ferdi Lammerink, a salesman by trade, and Hans Höfte of the City Party want to make fun of the VVD’s proposal. “Because it is a discriminatory and misogynic plan. They distribute the strings today on a market in Enschede. Also within the VVD, the proposal caused a stir – the proposal may be inserted into the program for the city council elections of March 2006. City councilor Cisca van der Aa threatens to resign if the plan is not withdrawn. “Because I don’t want to be part of a club that entertains this kind of humiliating and abject ideas. The VVD of Enschede takes a decision on the plan during its members’ meeting next week.
