The Lebanese Army Braces for an Israeli Attack on the Camps

10/07/05 -- Journalists for Al-Jazeera in Lebanon reported that the Lebanese army ordered its units settled around the Palestinian refugee camps to take the necessary measures to counteract attempts of a likely strike by Israel.

That comes after members of the Lebanese parliament began a campaign for disarmament in the Palestinian refugee camps amid complaints of a blockade imposed by the Lebanese army on positions of Palestinian factions thought to be pro-Syria.

A number of representatives in the opposition headed by Michel Aoun demanded that the government of Fouad Sinioura disarm the camps and accused the government of tolerating the issue.

For its part, the General Command of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) criticized the government because of what it described as a "squeezing blockade"* imposed on a number of military positions in Lebanon.

The Minister of Information, Ghazi Al-Aridhi, had dismissed the calls for disarmament of the camps and Hizbullah in accordance with the Security Council resolution 1559.

Al-Aridhi said at the end of the meeting of the Lebanese government that only two dossiers were possible for the internal security situation of Lebanon: certainly Lebanon must not agree to destroy itself for others, without making further clarifications.
