Four Killed in Cairo Explosion; American Man and French Woman Among Dead04/07/05 -- Reuters attributed to an official within the Egyptian Ministry of Health a statement that four people, among them an American man and a French woman, were killed in a bombing in Cairo’s First District. The explosion took place on a street frequented by tourists in the al-Hussein area. In addition to the four deaths, the explosion injured eighteen others, among them foreign tourists. Initial reports of the blast indicated that a person riding a motorcycle flung a bomb into the street, which was packed with tourists. But an Aljazeera correspondent quoted the Egyptian Minister of Health, Muhammad Aoud Taj al-Din, in saying that the bomb that was behind the explosion was deliberately planted; he dismissed that there was a motorcyclist who threw the bomb. A communiqué coming from the Egyptian Interior Ministry said that there had been an explosion on Jawhar al-Qa’id street, near the Sagha area in the district of al-Azhar. It added that among the wounded were “four Frenchmen, three Americans, an Italian, a Turk, and nine [Egyptian] citizens, and that the wounded were moved to the nearby al-Hussein Community Hospital. A number of ambulances arrived at the site of the blast along with forensic detectives gathering evidence under the protection of hundreds of police officers who had completely closed off the area. The French News Agency reported that British embassy employees wearing bulletproof jackets were seen in the area attempting to gather information to determine whether there were British tourists among the victims. The attack has been the first in Egypt targeting tourists since the attack last October that targeted Israeli tourists in Taba.* That bombing resulted in 34 dead and more than 100 injured. The Luxor bombing, which took place in November of 1997, has been the most deadly attack in Egypt targeting tourists.** It resulted in 58 dead, most of whom were Swiss.
