Talabani is First Kurdish President of Iraq

04/07/05 -- Baghdad -- In a historic session of the interim National Assembly, Iraqi representatives chose Jalal Talabani as President. He will become the first Kurd to occupy that position in Iraq's history.

In addition, the representatives chose both Adel Abd al-Mahdi, a Shia, and Ghazi al-Yawir, a Sunni, to be co-vice-presidents.

They are waiting for Talabani's taking the constitutional oath Thursday, after which Talabani will charge Abraham al-Jaafari, a Shia, with forming a new government as prime minister.

Talabani, in comments made to an al-Ahram reporter in Baghdad, said that he will work to strenghthen Iraq's role among the Arab nations, as well as "uproot terrorism" in the interior highland region of the country.

In Washington, the Bush Administration nominated Zalmay Khalilzad on Wednesday to be U.S. Ambassador to Iraq.
