Al-JazeeraAbout This News Source:Founded in 1996 by Qatar's Emir Hamad bin Khalifa, Aljazeera quickly became famous among locals, and infamous among Arab governments, many of which went to great lengths (including in one case turning off electricity to an entire country) to prevent their subjects being exposed to Aljazeera's "sensationalist" programming. Outside of the Arab world, few were aware of the new media outlet, until the events on September 11 propelled it to international recognition. Until then, it was the only regional media organization with an office and a correspondent in Kabul. In the days following Sept. 11, Aljazeera interviewed UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, the Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, the US Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Osama bin Laden. For the first time, a Middle Eastern media outlet found itself with the upper hand on the Western media, and it sought to take advantage of the opportunity to reposition itself as a global purveyor of news.
